Inspired by the card game Phase Ten, this case study explores the meticulous process of developing and harmonizing various designs for card game components. Hungry Moth focuses on conceptualizing and implementing cohesive visual and functional elements while still being a cute and visually captivating game for all to enjoy.

Let’s jump in…

What is Hungry Moth?

Hungry Moth is a card game, combining an adorable moth-themed design with a twist. Players strive to be the first to conquer five distinct Moon Phases, collecting specific clothing cards for each phase. Completing one phase advances the players, while the unique challenge lies in the tailored requirements for each hand dealt. Become the first moth to master all five Moon Phases and claim your victory.

Thematic Exploration

Conducting an in-depth analysis of Phase Ten's core mechanics and gameplay involved a thorough examination of its fundamental rules and interactive dynamics.. To ensure they matched our intentions, we conducted multiple trials of gameplay studies. This allowed for seamless integration with the game's structure, which was essential for creating a cohesive and immersive gaming experience and design.

Visual Conceptualization

Once the mechanics were solidified, the next step in game creation were visuals. Developing a visual style that captures the essence of a hungry moth navigating through different phases is a key aspect of the design process. This involves creating design sketches and moodboards to explore color palettes, typography, and the overall aesthetic element, ensuring that the rest of the process becomes cohesive and is a visually compelling representation of the theme.

Component Design

Transforming the game entailed working the illustrations into alignment with the games objectives. So the following items were created.

Game Cards: The deck includes Wild cards, Skip cards, Reverse cards, and numbered cards tailored for each Moon Phase.

Tokens: Tokens serve as tangible markers, representing accomplished Moon Phases.

Set of Instructions: A booklet with the game rules, setup procedures, and gameplay dynamics. It provides clear and concise guidelines on utilizing Wild cards, Skip cards, Reverse cards, and how to score.

Box Design: The card game is housed in a visually appealing box, reflecting the Hungry Moth theme. The packaging is not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and functional, designed for the storage of all components.
